One Year* Certification Program for Focusing Trainers
led by Gena Corea and Helen Hawes
This is a twelve month course for certification as a Focusing Professional by the Focusing Institute in New York. Once certified and a member of the Focusing Institute, you will join a community of dedicated professionals from around the world, and have access to a forum of discussion with some of the most creative minds in contemporary science and art. The Focusing Institute, which is the center of the international Focusing world, includes professionals from 33 different countries and four continents.
Discovered in the 1960's by Dr. Eugene Gendlin of the University of Chicago, Focusing is a way of accessing bodily knowing or getting a “gut feeling” about anything. It brings brand new information--not yesterday’s stale facts, not data you can find on the internet, but creations born of your own experiencing, right now. Focusing is a unique process in that it is easily combined with the arts, healing practices, business, education, spiritual growth, organizational development, science and much more.
If you are seeking more out of your career or personal relationships and wish to go deeper in the work you do, you might consider becoming a Focusing trainer. If you feel a sense of not-alive-enough, or an itch that says there are skills you have but are not using, then this program might be right for you.
Places you will find Focusers:
- In Corporations and Art Studios
- In Schools and Monasteries
- In Support Groups and Emergency Rooms
- In Grocery Stores and Sweat Lodges
- In Malls, Churches, and Temples
- In Law Firms and Television Studios
A few of the things you will learn to do:
- Listen with full body presence
- Understand what you’re truly feeling and wanting
- Become more friendly and compassionate towards yourself
- Solve problems creatively
- Be independent of external belief systems
As a focuser you will also learn how to “clear a space” so you can breathe more easily and recognize what most wants your attention now. As you explore inner space, you will recognize that your somanaut voyages are in territory as vast as an astronaut’s.
This year-long program entails weekly classes for a period of time, some day-long intensives, and weekend retreats. We combine Focusing with the arts, game playing and movement to introduce the experience into the cells of your body. This training is not about memorizing theories and concepts. Rather, it involves learning to be fully present. It is about role modeling this presence to others and listening in a way that welcomes and makes space for whatever comes. While there is some didactic teaching, the emphasis is on direct experience.
Focusing entails developing a compassionate and respectful relations with all parts of yourself--including parts you may have exiled long ago--and naturally widening that compassionate relationship to your friends, family and all you encounter.

Gena Corea, author of three books published by HarperCollins, has brought Focusing into the prison system, into the workshops she leads for writers (“Before Words Come”) and for dancers (“African Chi”) and into the office of a doctor in Senegal, West Africa with whom she has collaborated as a healer for many years.
Helen Hawes, an accomplished visual artist, has works in over 100 private and corporate collections. She has pioneered the introduction of drawing studios into the offices of a software company, where employees can create, play, and focus, bringing their full selves to the workplace and to each other. She has brought Focusing into a series of drawing seminars she has developed to heighten awareness, and into collaborative workshops where the emphasis is on group mind.
Together, Helen Hawes and Gena Corea lead Focusing and creativity retreats for groups and individuals in their Center for the Arts in Vermont, GERYUNANT. (www.geryunant.com)
*Certification depends on the mastery of certain skills. We will work with you to assess the level of your skills. Students may receive certification earlier or later than the designated 12 months depending on the amount of previous training and the completion of a practicum and the required hours in a focusing partnership.
